British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
