New research indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
