Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
