Weather experts are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, making extra layers vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Warnings Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this meant the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
