The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
