As stated by a high-ranking military official, the American armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Strikes

This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military buildup.

Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Pressure

The administration has faced growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.

While the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
